Venice Planning Commission weighed whether signs violating city law may stay past June 27. City Planner Chuck Place proposed an amendment to allow some non conforming signs to remain beyond the deadline, but the board did not reach a final decision.
Taddie Underground faces possible termination March 28 if Sarasota County does not reissue a work permit for restoring county roads in Venice. Venice City Council held that the contractor has had enough time to fix the troubled sewer and water expansion project and will honor the earlier ultimatum. Officials will follow the guidance of Associate City Attorney Wayne Hall and Lee Taddie.
After months of study by an ad hoc committee Venice residents will speak on a possible enterprise system for garbage collection at a public hearing set for Tuesday March 8. Council members Kalajian and Atz want public input before policy decisions on user pays versus ad valorem tax support.
Minor design changes push back the start of construction for Manatee Junior College’s Venice campus by 8 to 10 days. Classes remain scheduled to begin August 1984. Final approvals were given Feb 16 for the revised Berry Corporation land contract totaling 100 acres at U.S. 41 and River Road with prices of 500000 and 10000 respectively, and a March 16 closing date. Groundbreaking was slated for April 15 with completion targeted April 23 1984, now likely delayed slightly.
Sarasota County launches a readjustment counseling program for about 4400 Vietnam era veterans to address family, personal and career issues. The St. Petersburg Veteran's Center funds contracts with Gulf Area Psychiatric Services in Venice to provide counseling services.
The Venice Gondolier announces a new column Tidbits to appear on Saturdays inviting readers to send in items. Readers are encouraged to share funny bumper stickers or mentions of Venice in magazines so the newspaper will publish them for neighbor interest.
