Viewpoint: Will federal edict protect barrier islands near Sarasota
Our view questions if the Interior Department can designate Manasota Key Knight Island Boca Grande and other barrier islands as undeveloped. The move could end federal flood insurance after Sept 30 1983 limiting lending and slowing condo growth or hasten removal of undeveloped land if deadlines push developers to act faster. Congress action in mid August looms as conservationists vs property owners and developers collide over remaining undeveloped coast.
