A Monday tour found the Venice Fishing Pier closed after storm damage with cracks in decking and lost railing on the right half of the T end. Left railing twisted but intact stanchions. pier closed to fishing and sightseeing. Surfers and shell seekers flocked to nearby areas as jetty shows activity and shelling remains strong.
After a storm, parking at the north jetty park was being restored with 300 cubic yards of shell. The south jetty road remains closed with large rocks and debris strewn around. Pelicans linger as anglers report scarce fishing news while repair work drags on.
Visitors and fishermen find the North Jetty Park entrance and parking being leveled after fill washed away in the early Friday storm. A county grader works to level shell dumped by trucks in a project that began Monday to restore access to the jetty and picnic area.
Somes Sound in Acadia National Park Maine is the only true fjord on the US Atlantic coast. The waterway splits Mount Desert Island for about six miles, forming a natural sea inlet and scenic feature within the park.
