Venice Junior High School reduced drug related issues after School Resource Officer Pete Walker arrived. Police reported 40 arrests for the year half were drug related, with 60 percent occurring early in the year before Walker’s presence grew.
The annual budget battle in Venice tops $11.867 million in initial requests as City Manager Dale Rieth aims to trim $1.23 million from city departments. Rieth and Assistant City Manager Gary Bennett review and present the budget to the Venice City Council, with funds expected from utility and airport enterprises and a larger storm drainage and paving reserve. The council must approve before Oct 1.
The jury trial of Lillian Penner, charged with operating an illegal babysitting service from her Venice home, will be set July 2 at Sarasota County court. Penner and her husband ran the service from 240 West Hammock Terrace. a 14 month old drowned in January prompting the health department investigation. If convicted, Penner faces potential jail or a fine. the docket sounding to set trial date has been continued twice.
