A POT SMUGGLING ring has been broken, with details provided on page 6. The community page notes a separate feature: VLT OPENS summer season of one act plays, with more on page 16.
Community page feature highlights kids adopting pets and building bonds with animals at local shelters. Photos show children meeting dogs and cats, with volunteers explaining care and training.
Feature column questions travel dangers and stresses the risks travelers face as Murph weighs options and remedies while noting the article appears on page two of the publication.
Venice officials heard from the Parks and Recreation Board that Caspersen Beach should be turned over to the state. The board argued state ownership would reduce Harbor Drive traffic and cover maintenance costs while the state could add an access road east of the beach and charge a 25 cent admission. The League of Women Voters supported the transfer, and local officials noted a resident manager could curb vandalism.
Nancy Eckerd, 20, daughter of Republican gubernatorial hopeful Jack Eckerd, travels statewide as her father's ears. She builds a youth group, Young Floridians for Jack Eckerd, and aims to turn campaign work into a career. Her regional duties include Englewood, North Port, and Manatee.
Tamma Wells, Venice High School 1975 graduate, works at the Venice Water Department while studying environmental technology at the Florida Institute of Technology. She analyzes water chemistry, monitors pressure at the reverse osmosis plant, learns mechanics, and earns money for college. She notes no special treatment for being a woman and enjoys the challenging, evolving work with a crew she calls supportive.
City officials vow to withhold details of the Venice reverse osmosis water plant review until the R/O Investigation Committee completes its audit. Councilman Frank Proctor notes the report will be presented only after all facts are gathered. Mayor Harry Case has not seen the Reynolds Smith and Hills report, which cost 5000 dollars.
Venice state representative Ted Ewing called the 1978 Florida session reasonably good with minimal damage but potential time waste. He cited a $6.15 billion budget with 1,300 new state employees and an $800 million spending rise, a $70 million reserve, and no tax increase. The session funded rotunda restoration at $8 to $10 million and overhauled workers compensation to cut small injuries and raise major ones, with a 25 percent attorney fee share for lawsuits. Sarasota County joined the Manatee Junior College district, plus $60,000 for a Venice campus feasibility study.
