STEP program targets U.S. 41 to cut deadly crashes
Sarasota County Sheriff Jim Hardcastle announced enhanced enforcement by the Selective Traffic Enforcement Program along a 5.8 mile stretch of U.S. 41 from Glengary Street to Vamp Road. STEP Traffic Analyst Robert Wagoner notes 1976 77 and 78 show high crash rates with 1976 totaling 5 fatalities 113 injuries and 91 property damage incidents costing about 1.7 million dollars. Hardcastle cites speed drinking and improper turns as key causative factors drivers must control.
