Dubrovnik Travel Log Tour Highlights and People
Gene Caffrey writes from Dubrovnik Yugoslavia October 1977. The Old Town sits above the Adriatic on a hillside with a costly taxi ride from the Excelsior hotel and a plum brandy called slivovice that makes eyes water. A multilingual taxi driver with Navy service guides a half day along coast towns dating to Roman times and explains a socialist economy restricts private business while Tito is president for life and will be replaced by a rotating four year term after his death. The piece notes heavy tourism, strong church attendance, clean well dressed children, pleasant weather, and high bread quality with costly dining options, plus a brief glimpse of local politics and travel limits.
