Venice Hospital seeks to bypass certificate of need rules

Venice Hospital officials want to avoid the certificate of need process in the future. Director Ron Hanson outlined how a new holding company Gulf Area Medical Properties Inc and the Venice Health Facilities Foundation insulate the hospital from federal regulation and aid fundraising. He noted the holding company could also house a psychiatric day care center and help raise capital while preserving existing funds. The hospital is appealing a state decision allowing a 100 bed Englewood facility, arguing residents favor Venice Hospital with 70 percent of Englewood users and 25 percent of patients coming from Englewood.
