Venice Enacts Strict Drug Ordinance Faces Arraignment Glitch
Lawrence Edwards, 25, of Houston, failed to appear for arraignment on a misdemeanor charge under Venice’s strict drug ordinance adopted May 12. The case stalled as Judge Stahlschmidt was unavailable and Judge Silverman presided. Edwards allegedly hid a vial containing marijuana during arrest. Bonds set include 500 for the drug charge, 1000 for the assault count, and 200 for failing to appear. The ordinance, pushed by Police Chief Waymire and drafted by State Attorney Gardner, remains under constitutional review by Sarasota County officials.
