Sales tax debated as Sarasota County explores local option
County lobbyist Leo Kosky travels to Tallahassee to press for a local option sales tax to relieve taxpayers. The plan envisions raising the tax from 4 to 5 percent with exemptions for food medicines and rent and earmarking revenue for property tax relief and other needs. The legislative delegation remains cautious, seeking a statewide referendum, while Anderson projects 16 to 18 million dollars annually from a one percent increase based on retail sales.
