Elderly Englewood Woman Attacked by Pit Bull Pair
A 68 year old Englewood resident, Helen Dudgey of 190 E Wentworth St, was savagely attacked by two black pit bulls while riding a three wheel bicycle. Neighbors report the animals escaped a pen, while Woodrow Hopkins, who witnessed the attack, said he beat the dogs off with a large aluminum pole. Dudgey was treated at Englewood Emergency Clinic and later Venice Hospital for extensive lacerations. The dogs belong to Pete Helewski of 120 Lakeview Dr and, despite shots and tags, remain in the neighborhood amid calls for removal. Police say current pit bull laws limit criminal charges unless repeated bite reports exist, with civil liability possible for owners. Hopkins and his wife plan a neighborhood petition.
