Jim Beans, sports editor of the Gondolier, reports seeing a low, silent plane in heavy fog near Jacaranda Plaza. Moments later a thump was felt and the plane disappeared toward Venice Airport, leaving shoppers puzzled as he continued his night.
A Cessna 172 Skyhawk crashed near Venice Airport as dense fog enveloped the area. David Whiteside, 40, and his 16-year-old son Eric died, while a third occupant survived. Sheriff's deputies and federal officials attended the scene, sifting wreckage to determine the cause.
