Chickens Aid Early Detection Of Sleeping Sickness Outbreak
Sarasota County runs a chicken monitoring program to detect encephalitis early. Dr. Henry Morton says no current outbreak, but past year saw 58 infections and two Florida deaths. Coops at four sites collect monthly chicken blood to flag virus presence and prompt expanded mosquito spraying if traced.
