Sarasota County commissioners approved a 436 827 Urban Mass Transportation grant to offset the SCAT deficit while denying a Siesta Beach air show request for April 26. The South County Family YMCA Child Day Care Center will open May 19 with director Cheryl Wolff overseeing final preparations. The 42 capacity facility serves ages two to five from 6 30 a m to 6 p m with lunch brought by children and snacks provided. Non members pay 5 50 daily and members pay 5 with staff ratios planned above county requirements. A fenced outdoor playground and safety measures accompany a grant over 30 000 from the Selby Foundation funding the Y’s construction changes.
The Venice Planning Commission approved a 4 to 2 vote a special exception for the Southwest Florida Retirement Center allowing a structure up to 85 feet high. The 176 unit self care apartments raise density questions as classification shifts from nursing home to multiple family housing may cap density at 18 units per acre on the 8.7 acre site. Attorney Donald OConnell argues for nursing home status to avoid limits. A resident buyer urged keeping the project as a nursing home or risk losing her apartment. A joint meeting with the City Council was suggested to resolve density, but the commission postponed final density action. The panel had earlier unanimously recommended rezoning to OPI.
The Venice area Board of Realtors awarded seven south county families beautification certificates and flowers and inducted 18 Realtors Associates plus one Realtor. Mayor Case proclaimed April 13 through 19 as Private Property Week and Attorney Norwood Gay III spoke on private property rights.
