Venice area service stations report widespread weekend closures as gasoline allocations shrink. At Fina on US 41 Bypass Mike Clark limits pumps, closing weekends. Shell gets 95 percent of prior allotment but still faces shortages. Gulf and other stations shorten hours to cope. Dealers blame supply control and increased demand, not true shortages, and note environmental restrictions affecting drilling.
The school board outlined priorities for 17.8 million dollars in new construction over five years with 1.38 million more if a North Port Venice school is added. First priority is an east central elementary to ease crowding at Ashton Brentwood Wilkinson Fruitville, followed by a north county school funded by The Meadows and an easternmost site for another elementary. An additional junior high may be built east of existing properties by 1985 as the population shifts east.
Venice High Band Boosters appeal for community donations to fund travel for the Venice High School band to the state competition in Miami. The group borrows percussion from Sarasota High for practice and must raise money for buses meals motels and awards while the school board provides limited funding.
