South Venice residents will vote April 21 on a land swap with the county that would give SVCA a 1300 foot continuous Gulf front. SVCA would trade its northern parcel for the county parcel to gain a continuous beach and enable a Lemon Bay footbridge and docking facilities.
Ryan Rose, an eight year old battling an inoperable brain tumor, has received chemo therapy after radiation reduced the tumor last summer. The Ryan Rose Fund at Venice-Nokomis Bank has raised over $10,000 to cover expected costs, with donations flowing from local supporters and across the United States.
Venice updates its workwear with tan shirts and brown trousers, replacing light green and dark green. Names appear on one pocket and the city logo on the other, as uniforms transition with wear. Supervisors wear brown trousers and white shirts. fabric aims for comfort and public identification.
Sarasota County Commission unanimously approved an ordinance to prohibit possession manufacture delivery or advertisement of drug paraphernalia. Venice officials supported the measure citing similar local ordinances and pledging enforcement. Dr Charles Koch urged community leadership to combat youth drug use with statistics about teens and long term harm.
Venice Planning Commission approved a 50 unit condominium project on four acres north of Woolco Dept Store. Developers Alan Towsley and Alan Ward presented the plan with 16 two bedroom and 12 one bedroom units plus 22 one story villas. Two entrances are proposed from Venice By Way and an internal roadway may hinge on ownership of a 30 foot paved strip.
