In Rockford Illinois on October 18 the infant daughter of William Zimmerman of Hilda was hit by a shot from an eight gun held by her six year old brother. About one hundred pellets were extracted from the child who died hours later.

A prolonged, bitter conflict is feared unless a deal is reached before elections. Possible April broader coal wage demands loom from United Mine Workers for both hard and soft coal. Wyoming Valley operators show strong resistance to any raise beyond 10 percent without conditions. One operator says settlement requires the strikers to take 20 percent with no extra terms.
Mrs. Joseph Janus of 3709 Escaneba avenue South Chicago dreamed of her husband’s death under a railroad train and the prediction came true as Janus was struck and killed at the Eighty fourth street grade crossing of an Illinois Central suburb line He was en route to his job at the Montgomery steel works and died after being dragged by the train for several feet as witnesses and the engineer reacted at the scene.
John Hale Woodbury son of Chippewa Chief Hole-in-the-Day was acquitted of selling liquor to an Indian by a novel defense. He argued the incident was a survival of tribal feud and that enemies of his father sought revenge on his family. the Pillager band that killed the chief was linked to the state disturbances. The jury acquitted him after a short deliberation.

In Chicago on October 13 a 65 car freight on the Elgin Joliet and Eastern collided with a Brig railway train at 112th street and Torrence avenue. Eight cars derailed and burned. the crash blamed on dense fog. Engineer C W Patterson injured, others jumped. The Brig train, 33 cars, continued south, eight cars toppled and burned. water scarce for fighting the blaze. The EJ&E engine was wrecked.

Dr Judson Smith spoke on nations and outlook while forecasting a new China facing progress Western arts and a glorious destiny. England Russia Germans the United States are guarding their futures as the celestial empire rises toward a modern era. The future will reveal a transformed China with a destiny tied to world progress.
A horrific rail disaster eight miles west of here on the Chicago and Alten line occurred at 9 near Curryville as the fast passenger train exploded and derailed. Engineer Pat Markey and porter John Mason were severely injured, many passengers hurt, with possible loss of life.
Three university students were taken into custody by Ann Arbor police for disturbing William J. Bryan as he attempted to speak from the courthouse steps. Bryan urged the chief to release the prisoners, saying no malice was intended. He delivered three speeches early in the Democratic campaign before breakfast.
