London dated Nov 2 reports the Rustenburg column under Col. G Benson suffered a severe reverse southeast of the Transvaal. Benson and eight officers were killed. thirteen officers and 58 noncommissioned officers and men died. 156 were wounded. Dispatches from Pretoria note heavy casualties and the Boers withdrew after fierce rear-guard fighting.
Luckett files in Cole county circuit court claiming $3,000 against Supreme Court Division No.2 judges Gantt Sherwood and Burgess for denying a writ of habeas corpus to Joseph Roberts, a penitentiary inmate serving a term for burglary tools. Litigation seeks $2,000 total damages, $1,400 from each judge, asserting unlawful delay and unlawful refusal.
