Rioters in St Louis attacked police and train crews, throwing bricks and stones. Mounted officers repelled the mob with sabers and horses, sending some antiwar sympathizers to the hospital. Chief Road Officer Will Minary, acting as conductor, was beaten and later hospitalized, with Minary in serious condition at home.

Germany reportedly opposes turning U S interests to Berlin if relations suspend. A warship plan is floated to recover costs and indemnities tied to Harput and Marsah.

Colorado Springs May 14 A director of the Portland Gold Mining company announced that the recent rise in its share price is due to a newly opened vein at the 70 foot level. The vein is fifty seven feet wide and is the largest mineral vein yet opened in the county.
Mrs Mary Shores was arrested in Beardstown Tl on May 14 charged with murdering William Beham in Calhoun county about five years earlier. Beham was killed and Shores disappeared soon after. The complaint was filed by John Gerry who says Shores confessed to him.
Aboard the Argus under Captain Munter the ship sailed from Port Angeles to San Francisco and sank the Hanganan near quarantine waters, after a collision off Santiambo. The Solan and its cargo were fully damaged.
