Slave mentor and brave child in New Orleans tale
Fragment from a 19th century narrative recalls Sam, a 12 year old enslaved boy bought by Col. Sommers in New Orleans. Hazel Sommers teaches him letters while danger stalks the woods near their home. A white farmer heroically defends Hazel as a panther attacks. Sam dies protecting the girl and is buried in the family plot with a grave marker reading Little Sam.
