Death of George Q Cannon in Monterey Cal
George Q Cannon died this morning in Monterey California after a quiet night. A midnight bulletin said he rested easy before a sudden change. His body was sent to San Francisco for embalming and Salt Lake City for interment. Cannon, a pioneer Mormon leader and former congressman, rose to prominence after Brigham Young. Born January 1 1827 on the Isle of Man, he moved to Nauvoo then Salt Lake City. He aided Brigham Young’s estate, faced polygamy prosecutions, was captured and escaped, later jailed briefly, and finally fined and imprisoned 200 days. Surviving wives were Clara V Martha T Sarah Jans and Eliza L. best-known son is ex-Senator Frank J Cannon.
