Death Closes a Tragedy in Wabash County

The death of Henry Haw in Edwards county tops a Wabash county tragedy. Haw, a 40th Illinois veteran in poor health, held a pension of 800 dollars monthly and owned a Belmont home valued under 200. As Belmont village constable in 1883, he shot John Wogan after a confrontation near the courthouse, killing him. Wogan had no pistol, Haw was jailed on a habeas entry, later released, and the case stirred jury debate as to indicting a man who could not be convicted.
