Editorial admits error over Plum Creek bridge signing
The paper clarifies the warning system on Highway 93 near Sumner was not caused by a traffic death but by a structural inspection. It notes signing aims to prevent two heavily loaded trucks meeting on the one lane bridge and argues fatalities drive safety actions, though a death wouldn’t have prompted the signing if the bridge were sound.

Feeder cattle supply looks strong into fall says ISU economist
Iowa State University economist Gene Futrell says feeder cattle supply is growing and more young beef cattle may move to feed lots this fall and winter than last year. Based on USDA data on cattle numbers calf crops and placements, he notes buyers should delay rush purchases as larger supplies and later movements could push prices down. Placements have fallen about 11 percent in recent months with 1973 calf crop up four percent from 1972 and beef calves six percent larger than last year.
