State Auditor blasts Bremer County Auditor over records
The State Auditor Lloyd Smith delivered a critical report on Bremer County Auditor’s office at the Board of Supervisors meeting. He cited slow fund reconciliation, a $1,500 warrant misrecorded as $1,050, lack of a monthly outstanding warrants record, and a missing 20 year old claim register. He noted a new payroll timing change and a late federal tax payment tied to a revised computerized warrant system. The board acknowledged shortcomings but considered them not serious amid broader county administration findings.

Attorney files suit for $1 million in Ward case
Earl Fosselman an attorney from Sumner filed a Bremer County District Court suit September 22 against Montgomery Ward & Co. of Cedar Falls seeking one million dollars alleging his late wife died after alleged harassment by Ward officials during recovery from major August 1975 surgery. He claims warranties on a 1971 washer dryer freezer and range were extended to 1975 via oral agreement and separate charges paid. Fosselman says repairs in 1974 and ongoing appliance failures show the extension was invalid or inadequately honored. He is a former Bremer County magistrate and Iowa lawyer with 13 dependent children.
