Fragment from a juvenile verse describing a preferred valentine sent to mother and Kate Kellogg in St Nicholas with a playful tone and question of who might write it next.
The article surveys tiger lions and other beasts in circuses, stressing training, danger, and the keeper’s skill. It contrasts affection with practicality, notes injuries and the whip as control, and discusses costs and demand for珍 wildlife, noting hippos and pumas and the need for capable trainers.
A young schoolteacher in Rome N Y was arrested for whipping a nineteen year old boy described as large and grown. She claimed the boy disobeyed her and used profane language, and that he struck her as she tried to punish him. She was acquitted. Also noted are a Detroit Free Press jab and an Indian proverb about zeal, plus a Loweran firm bill collection anecdote ending with the name still listed as dead after a second attempt.
A plea invites the afflicted to consult certificate writers or write for Dr Schenck s Book on Consumption Liver Complaint and Dyspepsia It details disease forms diet clothing and exercise guidance from years of lung disease treatment experience and urges reading for those with throat or lung concerns.
Captain W H Blake of the Memphis and St Louis Packet Line commends Dr J H Schenck & Son for Pulmonic Syrup Seaweed Tonic and Mandrake Pills saying they are good and reliable medicines after years of use in his family. Br Louis Mo Dec 12 1879.
A. Shelly of Smith & Shelly Dry Goods Merchants Grass Lake Michigan writes Dr J H Sonenk Philadelphia praising his medicines for consumption. He details long symptoms including night sweats a dry cough lung pain breathlessness and weak appetite. After starting the medicines he improves and cures are claimed with many others helped.
A letter from B Narmandin Jr of Woonsocket Rhode Island describes severe liver and lung illness cured by Pulmonic Syrup and Seaweed Tonic after decades of failed treatment. He claims lingering symptoms including cough night sweats blood-streaked matter and stomach swelling, but reports full recovery and recommends the remedies to others including a woman thought to have consumption.
The Rev Joseph Lame pastor of 18th Street Methodist Philadelphia writes from Sept 1 describing a five year battle with dyspnoea bronchial and pulmonary troubles. He recounts tried remedies and a turning point after obtaining a treatment from Dr Sohevk, detailing his struggle to continue preaching despite illness.
Fameiliea notes a rapid restoration to hearty health after support, claiming enduring well being to this day. The writer expresses gratitude and asserts the people helped possess strong restorative qualities.
Hodson Massachusetts May 5 1881. patient recounts severe lung disease including hemorrhages, failing doctors, and eventual recovery after following Dr J H Schenck’s regimen of Mandrake Pills Seaweed Tonic and Palmonte Syrup. He credits improved health, no further hemorrhages, and regained work ability to the physician’s treatment.
Mrs Barah A Carter from Caululisle Massachusetts writes of severe cough chest pain night sweats and vomiting after months of poor appetite and faltering health. She credits Dr Schenck’s medicines Palmonte Syrup Seaweed Tonic and Pills with curing her consumption after May 1878 and reports weight gain and improved health a year later.
Peter Christopher of Pawnee Illinois writes from June 13 1876 praising J H Schenck & Son Philadelphia and their Cod Liver Oil medicine. He describes a severe consumption scare lasting three years with doctors deeming three months to live and notes his weight gain to 180 pounds after taking ten bottles recommended by the firm and further use for family prevention.
Joel Stevens, a former 1st Maine Volunteer and Army of the Potomac soldier, credits Dr Shenox's tonics with curing chronic diarrhea a hacking cough and systemic debility after service. He recalls scurvy camp fever malaria and a near grave condition, reporting restoration after using Syrup and Tonic. He mentions the Cooper Shop and asserts the medicines saved his life.
Dr J Y Quimby of Jersey City tested sleep chloroform on three individuals including a 13 year old and a 10 year old. He succeeded in rendering them unconscious without waking. He claims minor surgeries could be done safely and that a criminal could administer chloroform in a sleeping room for malicious ends.
The great plague drove John Milton to Chalfont where Thomas Ellwood, his Quaker confidant, helped locate the retreat. Ellwood recalls Milton showing Paradise Lost for judgment then, after recovery, revealing Paradise Regained, crediting Ellwood for sparking the idea with his question.
A shark at Key West raided a dog and four cats along with two beer bones three old boots two beer bottles and an oyster can, leaving the creature still hungry as the boys quit to attend Sunday school.
