River area debate over recreation lake near Fayetta
Letters discuss opposed and supporting views on a proposed recreational lake in the Volga River Valley east of Fayetta. Supporters cite public benefit while opponents fear habitat loss. Elgin plans a 120 acre private Swiss Lake Estates development near Elgin, with 1200 lots and a new access road, coordinated by Jim Mondry and engineered by Owerd R. Green. Local sports notes include Bumner High baseball at 3-4 and Fridley Feed Mill’s softball loss to Sumner Bakery.

Playoff dates unclear as regional baseball races stay tight
Elkader clinches Northern Division title while several Southern Division bids remain unsettled due to rain. Sumner Aces sit fifth with 3-4 in conference play and finish with non conference games. Oelwein 5-1 trails leader Wapsie Valley by half game. Makeup games could force a three way tie for the Southern Division, with two games slated this week to decide division playoff participation. Sumner loses final conference game 3-1 at Delwein as errors plague their effort. Vic Heyer hurls a two hitter for Delwein while Sumner hitters manage only two clean hits.
