Post office history and early officers in Sumner area
The Sumner post office existed before the town was platted with Orlando S. Wright as first postmaster in 1861, followed by George Wheaton in 1862. The office joined Cassville in 1866 under Stephen F. Cass, amid later changes, with multiple postmasters through 1971. The Wilson Grove office served nearby Sumner until 1873, with fields moved per postmaster locations. The piece notes wartime and local events from 1930s to 1940s, including bank robbery alerts in 1930 and sugar rationing drives in 1942, plus home-front wartime activities and local civic efforts.
