Bill Bathke, a veteran Sumner movie operator with 15 years in the local theatre, recalls primitive booths, hand cranking, and fragile film. He notes early talkies misfired with unsynced records, slow upgrades, and a shift from pure to more modern productions while staying passionate about cinema.
A Fayette County Fremont District No 3 list names Bertha Harris Lillie Harris Nellie Barnard Mamie Sayles Inez Eggleson Hattie Eggleson Effie Egleson Elston Dickey and Johnny Johnson for abstaining from whispering during the first month of school. Also notes a showing of two reel series and one reel slapstick comedies scheduled.
The McAloon name in Sumner began in a dry goods business started by J W McAloon and John Backes in 1908. McAloon bought Backes out in 1919, expanded to grocery in 1925, and by 1956 moved all groceries to a new Super Valu building while dry goods remained. After J L McAloon’s WWI return, James McAloon managed the Super Valu, and Mrs McAloon ran the dry goods shop until her 1970 death.
