The council discussed water sewer connections and ground water drainage rules, vowing to prohibit foundation drains into the sanitary sewer and require detailed plans for water and sewer hookups. Inspections for illegal roof drains, water leaks, and possible main leaks were planned as part of addressing strain on the system.
The Sumner Jaycees will continue the Creek Cleanup Project which began in late June. A work session is set for Monday at 6 30 PM. Volunteers from other Community Betterment groups are invited to help with weed cutting using scythes and similar tools. Work starts at the bridge on West Fifth Street and runs south to the Railroad bridge south of First Street.

Nomination papers are available from School Secretary Mrs Eloise Siegfried for the Sumner Community School District election set for September 11. Incumbents Eldon Schoephoerster and Walter Erkel will seek re election. Director seats 2 and 4 draw Burton Sprole and Edwin Walternate as candidates. Deadline to file is 5 p.m. Thursday August 2. Swimming lessons begin July 28 at Whitmire Pool.
Frances Alvena Gosch, wife of Sumner superintendent Donald Gosch, died after a two car collision at Fayette County Line Road and Highway 3 nine miles south of Sumner. Her daughter Pam, 16, survived with injuries, as did two men in the other vehicle. A Mercy Hospital burial followed at St. John American Lutheran Church with Emerson-Milnes Funeral Home in charge. Frances Wood Gosch, born 1921 in Fayette, attended Upper Iowa University and married Donald Gosch in 1942. She was active in Sumner Community Memorial Hospital and the St. John Lutheran Church with her family.
Sumner volunteer firefighters were called to the Bernard Nolte farm two miles west and three and a quarter miles north of Sumner at 8 15 pm Tuesday to a smoldering hay fire. Firemen removed siding to reach the heat area and found a red glow and sparks as they worked. About six loads of hay were lost or damaged. A Junior Boys Golf Tournament is set for Saturday July 28 at Meadowbrook Country Club with entrants including 1973 Sumner High graduates.
A series of events highlighted the last week of the Sumner Supervised Recreational Program July 23 to 27. Monday features a 10 a.m bicycle parade at the junior high with four age-group prizes, Tuesday is Circus Day 10 a.m. to noon with races and games, and Wednesday offers a 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. picnic at Sumner City Park with free hot dogs, chips, drinks, and ice cream for registered participants. Regular play continues Thursday and Friday July 26 and 27. Also noted is Miss Rebecca Strottman earning a 3.60 GPA on Hamilton College’s Spring quarter honor roll.
Over 100 children joined the Sumner Day parade kickoff chaired by Jackie Duhrkopf and the Sumner Community High School band. Participants in costumes with decorated bicycles and pets processed from Guilford to the assembly area in front of the Sumner Produce building where winners were named. Awards went to divisions I through IV with multiple households recognized for top child entrants and pet entries.
The annual Jaycee Steak Fry and Orientation Meeting is set for next Tuesday evening July 24 at 6 30 at North Woods Park. Larry Crow Sumner Jaycee President will lead the post supper orientation on what it means to be a Jaycee assisted by Bill Moss National Jaycees Director from Bloyd and Gene Voss State Vice president from New Harmon ton. Open to current Jaycees and guests.
