Political conventions roll on with Republican nominations in several states and party leaders jockeying for the coming elections.
In a political development the Alabama Republican convention nominated John A Steele for governor. The move positions Steele as the party’s candidate in the forthcoming campaign. Local party members anticipate a tight race against opponents in the general election.
A massive Hoboken fire on a Saturday destroyed three North German Lloyd liners the Saale Bremen and Main along with docks warehouses and canal boats. Estimates say 200 to 500 may have died with about 300 to 400 injured as crews and passengers scrambled into the water and into burning holds. Rescue efforts saved 22 aboard the Bremen and many others were found in the holds of the Saale as flames swept the piers.
