An old advertisement heavy with claims for Vick's Floral Guide 1895 printed in tinted inks, listing seeds, flowers, and bargains such as Sweet Peas at 40 cents a pound and a name for a new double Sweet Pea for $300, with a 10 cent copy offer. Also includes varied notices about cures, rural aid, and local commerce.
The 1894 record reports barometer mean at 30.036 inches with a high of 30.96 at Sioux City on December 27 and a low of 2.20 inches on February 9 at Keokuk, with a state wide mean temperature of 49.7F and extremes from 109F at Spirit Lake on July 26 27 to -37F at Ames on January 25. Precipitation averaged 21.95 inches with September’s 7.43 inches at Keosauqua and a 2.77 inch 24 hour maximum at Atlantic October 1. Wind chiefly from the northwest, with a peak 70 mph from the south at Sioux City on June 20. The year logged 184 clear, 109 partly cloudy, 72 cloudy days and 66 days with any precipitation.

Waverly notes report a failed sale by Westgate company for a horse. Frederika raised 75 dollars in cash plus clothing for Nebraska sufferers. Local figures include G Rankin temperance lecturer visiting two weeks starting February 1. Also mentions Drayman J. Anderson moving to the city, Henry Petratz to Decorah, and Soldiers' Relief Committee activities.
Daily passenger trains operate on the Waverly Branch between Sumner and Hampton except Sundays. Schedules: Sumner 9:45 a.m. to Hampton 12:45 p.m., and Hampton 9:00 p.m. to Sumner 12:01 a.m., with connections to Dubuque, Chicago, St. Paul, Minneapolis, Des Moines, and Kansas City. Also notes on ice contracts, butter price trends, windmill sales to Britain, census work, and Midland Monthly offerings.
