Iowa hog market outlook favors producers into 1976
Iowa State University extension economist Gene Futrell expects a strong hog market through 1975 and into 1976 as pig crop and hog inventories tighten pork supplies. He notes USDA estimates show 1975 farrowings down sharply, with August September slaughter down 16 to 20 percent and fourth quarter down 20 to 24 percent, supporting higher prices though later pressured by beef, broiler supplies, and corn costs.

An ISU economist projects third quarter prices averaging in the mid to high $40s, with a dip to the low $40s in the fourth quarter. He says these levels would be profitable for producers and could spur further expansion in far rowings during late 1976 and into 1977.
