The editor and his wife returned Tuesday evening after a 16 day trip through 11 states and 12 railroads. They traveled 4500 miles, spent eight days on the southern border, noting blooming flowers, mosquitoes, and a stark climate contrast between winter in the north and summer in the south. They stopped at many places, but promise no full travel account, focusing on the country’s vastness and transitions.

Thunderbolt and St Augustine Journey Through Florida
A travel letter from a Mississippi reader recounts a rapid Florida swing in April 1893. After Savannah and Tybee Beach, the party visits St Augustine with Fort Marion and the old fort’s dungeon. They cruise St John River to Jacksonville, then Palatka and DeLeon Springs before reaching Tampa Bay and Port Tampa. The diary details orange groves, cigar factories in Ybor City, and the opulent Tampa Bay Hotel, with warm coastal weather and lively local scenes.
