Wescotts retire after 25 years at Sumner Gun Shop
Stan and Virginia Wescott retire from their Sumner Gun Shop after turning gun stock making into a thriving part time to full time business since 1948. They sold equipment to Clarence Haupt Jr who will run Haupt's Gun Shop at 306 West Sixth St. The couple's work produced more than 20 000 shotgun stocks for customers worldwide, including Africa Norway Cuba Guam the Canal Zone and all U S states. They started in a basement on the Sumner farm later moving to 403 No Railroad St in 1953 and expanding to a large garage addition. They joined Herter's Inc in 1955 and housed a walnut stock supply that lasted years. They faced a 1969 gun shop looting but recovered and continued until winding down to part time. They now plan travel with a new trailer while Wescott remains a postal employee in Sumner.
