Crowds gathered Sunday morning as thousands of troops began a historic departure. Onlookers described the scene as the greatest mobilization ever seen in Scluivan, with military units moving out under tight security and amid patriotic ceremony.
Ninety one Sullivan county youths bound for Camp Taylor Louisville were honored at a county wide event. A huge crowd gathered in court house park for a sendoff featuring music, speeches, and a long parade to the Illinois Central station where the men boarded trains amid cheers and tears.
Rev. J. T. Scull, popular pastor of the Methodist church, is reassigned for a third year at the church in Sullivan after a largely favorable congregation vote. The Vincennes district list includes scull for Sullivan and assigned pastors across nearby towns with multiple names and districts.
Sullivan County prepares for a fresh 40 percent of its quota for the new army to depart October 3. A public reception and fundraiser dinner are planned, with local donations noted from supporters including a tobacco fund effort. A possible county wide examination of conscripts may follow soon.
The seventh Indiana Apple show will be held in Washington Indiana after Evansville was deemed unavailable. The exhibit runs November 21 to 27 with shipping of fruit prepaid to Ebner Ice and Cold Storage in Washington for storage free until the exposition.
Five Fairbanks township youths enlist in the Navy together. Tandi Drake, Loren Thomas, Earl Gaston, Will Fuson, and Lester Ayre Lester join as apprentice seamen after medical clearances in Terre Haute. Drake, Fuson, and Lester train at Great Lakes, Thomas at Norfolk, Gaston at Newport.
A Springer and Gouchenour window shows Red Cross work by county women. A nurse at the sewing machine with a large flag center stage illustrates the vast volunteer effort for soldiers. Items include pillows, wash cloths, jackets, helmets, bed shirts, blankets, and comfort bags with essentials.
Ralph Mahan of Curry township spoke about Camp Taylor as a fine military home for Sullivan county national army volunteers. He described the medical process of multiple army boards and shared tips for recruits, including shoes underwear soap and shaving gear. he praised the Y M C A facilities nearby.
The funeral services for Perry Maxwell were held Thursday afternoon at the Christian church with Rev. John McD. Horne conducting. Burial followed at Center Ridge cemetery and the G A R honored him in attendance. A quartet performed and pallbearers included Robert Taylor, Joe S. Reed, John Gambill, J. M. Lang, W. R. Nesbit, and W. W. Harbaugh. Granddaughters Faye, Mary, Ruth Loudermilk, Dorthy Rud dell, Mary Francis Maxwell and Mrs. W. D. Brown gave floral offerings.
Golden Webb a veterinary surgeon newly enlisted in the U S Service as a veterinarian left Monday for a camp in South Carolina to report for duty. William H McGrew son of Mr and Mrs W H McGrew enlisted in the army last week and left Monday for Jefferson Barracks Mo to join the quartermasters department as a truck driver at age 18.
A Ford owned by Ed Sevier near Caledonia was stolen from the east side of the public square around 9 o'clock Saturday night. Deputy Sheriff Brodie and Chief of Police Rich later located the car at the rear of the traction Station.
Seymour Cowles filed affidavit leading to the arrest of E. E. Meuhler, a druggist, on a charge of violating his druggist license. He posted $250 bond. The case marks a first for license violations amid prior liquor-sale charges.
Lieutenant Robert Linkenhoker of this city sails toward France as a member of the aviation corps. A card from his parents confirms his departure and his status with the air service.
Captain Paul Higbee of this city, previously stationed at Fort Harrison near Indianapolis, has been transferred to Camp Taylor near Louisville, Kentucky.
Letters from Sullivan county recruits say the Sullivan county boys reached Camp Taylor in Louisville at 3 30 Sunday afternoon and are quartered in barracks. Many assigned to the ammunition train with intensive eight hour drills daily except Sundays Wednesdays and Saturdays. Food and beds provided despite late trains with sirloin steak baked potatoes fried apples and blackberry cobbler on the supper menu.
Sullivan County prepares for its largest poultry show with goals of 450 birds rising to 1000. The Sullivan County Poultry Association forms committees at E S Griggs grocery and plans premium lists and member campaigns. The event runs January 2 to 7 with a related live stock show October 20.
Grand jury indictments in Vigo county name Buster Clark Eddie Gosnell Ben Taylor Harry Barker Harl Jeffers and Russell Kennedy for conspiring to rob the D B Bolinger garage at Farmersburg on July 13. They allegedly stole nearly five hundred dollars in automobile casings. Five suspects were arrested at Terre Haute.
Col A P Asbury of Farmersburg and his son Charles E Asbury visited on Saturday. Charles recently passed the consular exam and is ordered to report to Washington on October 8 for assignment. He previously supervised schools at Manilla Iowa and taught in Cherokee Indian schools in South Carolina.
Mrs Dovey Pyles 56 wife of William Pyles died at home after a yearlong illness with complications. Funeral at Baptist church conducted by Rev S Long, burial at Center Ridge cemetery. Daughter of the late Hutton Orr, survived by husband Elmer Pyles of Linton and two brothers Elam Orr of this city and James Orr of Merom.
The case of Fred Carty charged with assault and battery with intent to kill Erastus Miller was heard in Justice Lester's court. Carty was acquitted while Miller and Mrs. Carty had earlier been fined for a statutory offense.
Everett Beasley is appointed a clerk in the Sullivan Post Office to succeed the resigned Max Crowder. The change takes effect immediately and fills the vacant position.
Defense speakers will address state issues at Sherman Theatre on Thursday afternoon. The event invites the public to hear state defense officials discuss policy, security, and budget considerations in a public forum.
Sullivan county officials and citizens are urged to attend a public meeting on September 27 1917 at the Sherman theatre. Representatives Thomas Davidson Greensburg Wm M Swain Pendleton J F Wiseman Linton and W L Slinkard Bloomfield will address residents before proceeding to Knox county Vincennes for another gathering.
Mrs. Lydia Elizabeth Ross aged 80 died Sunday night at her daughter Mrs. W W Harbaugh’s home after a long illness. The funeral was held Monday at the Harbaugh residence and conducted by Rev. John McD Horne. She had resided with her daughter the past year. home was in Dacoma Oklahoma. Remains shipped to Dacoma for burial with her husband and a daughter Ed Vorey of Dacoma among those traveling. Ernest Cowles purchases the news stand and business of Edgar Allen in the post office lobby and takes charge Monday morning. Allen plans to move to Louisville to operate a stand near Camp Taylor.
Anna E. Banks, 40, of Haddon township, has been adjudged insane and an application filed for her admission to the Southern Insane Hospital.
Mr. and Mrs. H Bennett and Mr. and Mrs. O Stark of Shelburn motored to Bedford and West Baden Sunday to be guests for a few days of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Dussard and Mr. and Mrs. A Sears.
