Thomas Newman an oil man died after falling from the Indianapolis Southern bridge at Riverton on Saturday night. Witnesses said he drank heavily and quarreled with men on the Illinois side. Coroner's verdict called it accidental death.
The Central Union Telephone Company sent Miss Bette Meyers of Linton to Sullivan to instruct local operators and assist on the switchboard for a few days. Meyers, the chief operator at Linton, travels to exchanges across the region to improve service for operators and customers.
Thomas Ridgeway, a well known salesman, was cut on a barbed wire fence in the northwest part of town Friday night. His horse was frightened by a passing automobile and he and Mrs. Ridgeway were thrown. The fall left his arm badly cut but Mrs. Ridgeway was not injured.
Merom enters its 50th year as Union Christian college opens on September 15 with a record enrollment. The current year is projected to be 40 percent larger than last year, with students from multiple counties and states. A new dormitory for about 70 and the president’s home nearing completion mark ongoing campus improvements.
At the Union mine north of town last Wednesday afternoon Elmer Martin and nine others were on the cage to ascend when a loaded car descended unrestrained due to no spray. Martin's foot caught the cage and his leg broke below the knee. One other man was injured.

A record Saturday Fair drew the largest crowd to date with strong interest in events such as the ladies riding contest and the 2 year old colt exhibition. First prizes went to James H Collins and Sam Springer in the colt class while farm products hay clover seed and oats showed solid quality despite summer weather.
Telegram received by Mrs Joseph Hawkins announces the death of her brother W W Walla in Champaign Illinois He formerly resided in this county and had been engaged in the lumber business for many years He was a prominent member of the Presbyterian church at Champaign where the funeral was held Sunday afternoon.

Frank J. First cashier of the Shelburn bank reports witnessing a novel incident in the Indianapolis lobby. He says newspapers exaggerate nothing, claiming brewers staged a prize fight there Sunday to deter county option opponents from returning home.
A Sullivan interurban line car struck a buggy carrying Mrs. Alice Ritter of Youngstown and Miss Kate Eaton near Youngstown around seven on Monday evening. The buggy was demolished and both women were thrown out. Mrs. Ritter suffered a broken arm while Miss Eaton had cuts and bruises.
Hugh N. Hicks appeals Justice Goodwin's ruling in Carlisle against Rush McCammon for 40 dollars commission on a livery barn sale. Hicks seeks circuit court review after the adverse decision.
Two men enter Illinois for a county matter as a boy named Bayard becomes a focal figure in the evolving case.
Donn M. Roberts head of the Terre Haute Traction Company and promoter of the Fairbanks Trust Company was arrested on a grand jury indictment charging grand larceny. He allegedly took 60 rails from Southern Indiana rail road and 46,000 pounds of steel used partly to build a Terre Haute to Merom traction line.
Two 16 year old boys from Marshall Illinois were arrested at the Indianapolis Southern Station by Marshal James Willis. They carried a shotgun and rifle and planned to flee to Kentucky. Fathers later retrieved them to Marshall.
The residence of Calvin Moore three and one half miles east of Sullivan was destroyed by fire about 10 o'clock Saturday morning. The fire started in a defective flue and had gained headway before Mrs. Moore and her children noticed it. Mr. Moore was away. Only a few furniture pieces were saved. Loss estimated at 2500 dollars, partially covered by insurance.
