The writer describes camp routines, a mule-skinner tale, and a stop in a public square while noting letters home and a shift toward big show duties.
Sullivan County Council approved additional 1917 year appropriations and set 1918 salaries and expenses for clerk, treasurer, recorder, sheriff, surveyor, and various county offices. Notable items include 5000 for elections and 2500 for county defense, plus 17350 for roads and bridges and 8000 for Board of Children's Guardians.
John E M Purcell president of the Carlisle school board filed in Circuit Court for a restraining order against Tarlton C Woodward trustee of Haddon township. The suit seeks to stop use of the Carlisle joint high school building for grade pupils and hiring of teachers there. The case pits township trustees against the Carlisle board in a battle over school operations.
Forty nine young men left Friday for Camp Taylor in Louisville to begin military training. The list names Albert Atkinson Shelburn Bell Bell, Sulliven R A Hobert Oles Sullivan R 6 Earl Booker Paxton Edward McBurris, Gilmour, and many more from Sullivan County including Paxton Farmersburg Dugger Shelburn Linton Carlisle Carlisle and Merom among others.
John E. Driver age 65 a former county commissioner and farmer of Jefferson township dropped dead Sunday morning while opening a Bible service at Shiloh church east of the city. He had been in poor health and died of heart failure. The funeral was held at Shiloh yesterday. Born July 25 1883 he was the son of James F E and Lavina Driver and served two terms as county commissioner beginning in 1908.
A government rule requires newspapers to drop subscribers unpaid for three months in advance to save power and mail transport. Readers are warned to check the number after their name. if it is lower than 2723, the subscription is delinquent and may be discontinued this week.
Registration will be held tomorrow Thursday from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. for ages 18 to 45. Registrants must register at a precinct where they vote or near their home if they do not vote. Notices are posted in each precinct and printed in the newspaper. Exemption claims are not taken at registration but later with questionnaires. All participants will follow upcoming regulations issued by the president.
The county hospital trustees offer two rooms for selected men needing surgical attention to fit them for military duty. Services of the hospital and physicians are donated.
The will of the late William H. Jones, a major Sullivan County landowner who died last week, was opened for probate in the circuit court on Saturday. Hermon Jones named executor, trust provisions place land under trustees Cyrinthia Clayton and Ruth E. Jones with widow Mary M. Jones and three children receiving specified annual income. Trustees manage the estate, debts, and operations with no bond, and a succession of reversion clauses directs eventual transfer to Island Levee Association trustees for drainage work on the Wabash river property.
James Trull, 79, longtime Sullivan contractor, died Saturday afternoon at his Cross street home after an extended illness. Funeral at the Catholic church Monday was led by Rev. Sprigler. interment at Center Ridge. Pallbearers were three sons-in-law Frank Lowry, Will Dooley, John Hiatt and church members Dr. G. M. Murphy, Frank Douthitt, Owen Conklin. He was born in England and married in 1861 to Missouri Moffett. Surviving children include Elizabeth Hull, Mrs. John Hiatt, Mrs. Will Dooley, Mrs. L. D. Blessing, and Mrs. Frank Lowry.
Public sale announcements for Cyrus Pierce to be held at his farm on September 18 and for Charles EB Boles and Son at the old Thornberry place three miles east of Graysville on September 23. The notices appear in this Union issue.
Carl Toole, son of Rev. R. H. Toole of Greencastle and Rainbow Division soldier in France, sent a German gas mask to Miss Katherine Kirkham. The mask differs from Allied types with mica eyes and a tin case plus extra mica lenses. It is exhibited at the War Womens shop.
W B Jewell of Turman township received a letter from W R Castle Jr director of the American Red Cross about his son Herman Jewell who lost a leg in action in France. The young man continues to improve and is now able to move about on crutches.
Private Roy Hammond and Private Cecil Butler are seriously wounded in action in France. Hammond, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. P. Hammond of Hymera, joined the first county unit to Camp Taylor and has been in France since May, with a hospital report after gas exposure. Butler, son of Mrs. Josephine Butler south of Dugger, is also badly hurt.
Mrs Letitia Robbins widow of Franklin Robbins aged 79 was found dead in a chair at her Thompson street home Sunday noon after long illness. Funeral held at the residence Tuesday afternoon conducted by Rev W E Gray. Survived by daughter Mrs Anna B Chambers four sons Mes Robbins Oscar Robbins Thomas Robbins and Frank Robbins two brothers John Creager and A L Creager and a sister Mrs Rachel Whalen.
Sullivan county will host a community singing next Saturday at the courthouse park in cooperation with War Camp Community Service. R W Akin leads the event with a noted Indianapolis speaker possible. A large crowd is expected with patriotic wartime songs and a soldiers chorus possibly from Indianapolis. The Council of Defense assists planning.
Bazil Bledsoe 18 son of Mish Bledsoe Cass township pled guilty to petit larceny and was sent to Imndi ena Boys school. Harrison Ashcraft fined ten dollars for letting liquor sales after hours. Frederick Long 15 pled guilty to grand larceny with punishment withheld and custody given to Robert Hedworth. William Pender, blind from Washington, on bond for assault and battery, pled guilty and released on recognizance pending good behavior.
Mr and Mrs C D Hunt received a Thursday message that their son Captain Beeson Hunt arrived safely in France. He left August 24 after a propeller failure delayed his voyage from Camp Mills where his ship had been headed out August 14. He served as acting Major and battalion commander and is expected to receive the commission as Major now that he is overseas.
Curtis Bridwell summoned to Fort Benjamin Harrison for a military service examination has been assigned as a military clerk on the Sullivan Exemption Board. He will remain in that post until January first, then likely be reassigned. He may visit Indianapolis several days before returning to resume duties locally.
A dispatch from France reports Lieutenant Loudermilk serving in the Army. It notes his commission as second lieutenant and confirms his status as an Army officer early in his service.

He details bribing guards for admission to the prison admired the 12th century tower and Italianate murals and notes a grand steeple chase with bold horsemanship and a young officers sharp humor about being a shave tail.
