People's State Bank to install a top burglar proof safe

George R. Dutton and Joe T. Akin, president and vice president of the newly formed People's State Bank of Sullivan, return from Cincinnati with a manganese steel safe from the Victor Safe & Lock Company. The safe, designed as a single solid body with a ground door and triple movement Yale time lock, aims to deter nitroglycerine and other explosive methods used by burglars as reports detail evolving safes. The bank, opening in the southwest corner of the public square in mid November, also purchases furniture and equipment for its new quarters.

Cyrus E. Davis and the tariff debate in Greene county

A Washington Herald commentary defends Cyrus E. Davis while challenging his anti tariff stance. The piece traces Davis's shift from Bryan supporter in 1896 to today praising Republican protectionism, arguing his wealth from coal growth and tariffs proves his past forecasts wrong and labels his current denunciations as insincere. It also notes Davis’s rise in Greene county commerce and labor gains over a decade.
