Fairbanks Indiana October 28 Three weeks to the subsidy election divide voters into three classes welcome dread and indifferent. The piece argues against a subsidy, warning it harms distant taxpayers while promoting private gain for promoters. It cites 1776 tea taxes as a parallel and questions a $75 000 subsidy claiming it benefits insiders not the public.
A. W. Finley of Chicago, with about 200 workers en route to Robinson Florida, fell under a westbound train at the Indianapolis Southern depot at 11 o clock. The wheels severed his left foot above the ankle. Bystanders rescued him. Dr. Joe Crowder dressed the wound and Finley was taken to a Terre Haute hospital.
Shelburn on October 29 reports Terre Haute Indianapolis and Eastern Traction Company officials including Mr Grover visited to arrange a new interurban station on the recently purchased lot. The plan calls for a commodious station meeting all required standards.
Miss Ethel Hammond, stage name of Fannie Hancock of this city, is described as a charming comedienne whose pictures are shown here. Her work is praised as first class in every respect and she is a popular entertainer attracting general attention.
Shelburn reports a Hungarian miner at the St. Clair mine was crushed between a car and a prop Thursday afternoon and suffered a badly fractured leg. He was transferred to St. Anthony's hospital in Terre Haute for treatment.
James Crawford of Terre Haute operates an oil drilling outfit on the Blakeman farm three miles east of Paxton.
Fire destroyed the wash house at the rear of E. Rigney's home in Pierce's addition early Friday morning. No injuries reported. Damages were not specified.
Shelburn records say the infant child of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Spoonmore died Saturday morning. The family buried the infant in Hymera on Sunday.
Carlisle reports more Keeley graduates than any town its size. William Shepherd funded five cures and his bartender Sam Riggs offered a suit of clothes to a man who would abstain a year. The Carlisle kitchen factory plans to move to Evansville next spring. A bar fight left Lynam with a gash and Eads fined. Carlisle football suffered at Robinson with several injuries. A coal mine project employs 60 workers. No. 4 vein to be mined by January. The First National Bank prepares to occupy a new 32 by 50 foot building with bright plate glass.
Sheriff Walters and Deputy Smith conducted a two day search in Sullivan to curb a suspected upstairs poker game and Sunday liquor sale at James Dudley’s saloon. They located a locked upstairs room with about a dozen men and observed no chips, then watched the saloon for liquor acts, detaining Win Wolfe and inspecting various rooms but finding only bartenders scrubbing. The report hints at further official actions and a local Order of the Eastern Star visit to Sullivan Monday night with work and refreshments.

Wesley Mayfield Mrs Mollie Gilmour and Mrs Martha Whitlock of Jefferson township were arrested Saturday by Sheriff Walters on a grand jury indictment for arson. They allegedly assisted John Memeret in starting the April fire that hit Pleas antville business district. Mayfield had previously been arrested on a similar charge but not bound over then. They posted $500 bond for the next Sullivan circuit court term.
Shelburn Oct 29 The Kettle Creek Mining Co. will open a new mine east of town on the B T H railroad to secure cars from either line amid ongoing car shortages. The $50 000 plant will have shaft sinking soon and begin operations shortly with full output already contracted. Principal shareholders include O L Kelso A Seiffert J G Kirschner Cyrus E Davis and Job Freeman.
Thomas Brunger of this city died after a two year illness. He served in Company H of the 189 Indiana Volunteer Infantry under Abraham Lincoln. Survived by Stephen Brunger and Mrs. William Aydelotte, his siblings. Funeral details not listed.
In Farmersburg on Sunday night Walter Sparks attacked Vern Kester at the church door as the audience left after services. Kester suffered a deep scalp wound and was moved to the parsonage where Rev. A M Couchman, who had just preached on Evolution, treated the injury before the assailant fled town with the marshal in pursuit.
Harry Bohannon, a former Fairbanks farmer who sold a horse to Jesse Douglas for $80 in Fairbanks, remains missing. Marshal James Willis searched Terre Haute for clues, learning Bohannon left the city days before the sale. He was seen nervous and drinking, in saloons, and likely left town around 4 PM.on the interurban. He left debts totaling about $75 and owed others for a board bill, barber charges, and borrowed money. Jerusalem Chapter R A M will work in Mark Master degree with 11 candidates. Frank Dale and John Redhead recently received Royal Arch degree with attendees from Fairbanks Caledonia and Carlisle.
Margaret McShanog sues Hugh McShanog of Brazil for divorce alleging cruelty inhuman treatment failure to provide and drunkenness as grounds in this Sullivan base ball connection.
Farmersburg detective Lawrence Seeman son of Vigo county farmer Jacob Seeman was arrested here last Wednesday for fast driving. His father has hired an attorney to defend him. Mr and Mrs Thomas A Bland of Mt Carmel Ill returned home after visiting relatives in this city. Bland praised Mt Carmel and Sullivan. Dick Bland now a locomotive engineer in Seattle. Thomas Hardy of Oaktown, formerly in Oregon, was here Monday and had been summoned as a juror in Oregon land fraud cases.
John Memeret was arrested at his home in Pleasantville by Sheriff Walters on an arson indictment. He posted $5,000 bond for the next Sullivan circuit court term. A prior summer arrest for a similar charge preceded this stricter evidence against him.
A pleasant birthday gathering was given for Mrs W T Stratton at her Sullivan area home last Wednesday. Guests brought baskets and shared a bountiful meal while Mrs Stratton received gifts including a Morris chair from relatives and friends.
Sheriff Walters left yesterday for Michigan City with Elmis known as Nick Carter who was recently convicted in the circuit court of the murder of Joseph B. Orr and sentenced to life in the penitentiary. Ray Carter and his brother Nick fought in the jail Friday night with Ray reportedly suffering the worse injuries.
The Union carries a full page advertisement for O M Patton and company offering a two week sale starting Friday. Woods the clothier changes its advertisement, and The Golden Rule Department Store also presents a full page ad in this issue.
Dode Chambers, Sullivan's well known blind man, has just returned from a trip through Missouri and Arkansas where he was looking for work but didn't see any. He says he had a pleasant trip and traveled in a side door Pullman, noting courteous treatment from train crews.
Shelburne Oct 29 Commodore Hall fire boss at Mammoth suffered eye pain after a piece of sulphur lodge entered his eye. The irritant was removed by Dr Wrork.
Infant child of Mr and Mrs Chas Cochran living one mile east of Shelburn died Saturday and was buried at Little Flock on Sunday in a quiet local funeral.
