Private Harris recounts experiences from Army life while Sullivan boy notes they have been attending concerts run by Fritz.
Jacob Meeker former U. C. College Merom grad and five term congressman from St Louis died in St Louis Jewish hospital after influenza and pneumonia. He married secretary Alice Redman hours before death. Burial in Attica Indiana. Meeker was 40. He earlier served as pastor and lawyer.
Fred Fenton Bays, Democratic candidate for Congress, releases a dope sheet via his wireless link from Indianapolis. It shows Bays winning the district by 1650 over incumbent Oscar E. Bland, with county by county tallies including Sullivan 1200, Knox 600, Owen 150, Morgan 100, Martin 100, Daviess 200, Greene 300, Monroe 150, and total 2300 in his favor.
An organization is formed in the county to aid the United War Work drive for U S troops overseas. County chairmen include YMCA Co H Stratton, YWCA Mrs A B Shaffer, Catholic National War Fund W T Leahy, Jewish Welfare Board Julius Harry, War Camp Welfare A D Cutler, American Library Association E C Snarr. Active participants: County Chairman A D Cutler, Publicity Director Robert Goucekenour, E C Snarr, Speakers Director H H Benson, Canvas Director C H Stratton, Treasurer.
Roy Nowlin aged 32, son of George Nowlin near Graysville, died Saturday at Camp Zachary Taylor Kentucky from influenza pneumonia. Burial followed at Mann cemetery with Home Guards military honors. Survived by father, three brothers Emmitt Will Archie, two sisters Pearl and Mabel. Mrs Francis E Goodman dies after short illness at Bloomington Illinois home of sister Mrs J F Hoke.
Will Watson schedules a Jersey cow sale at Maplewood farm on Tuesday October 29. H C Jewell and J W Milligan plan a public sale at Milligan farm near Fairbanks on Wednesday October 30. H A Van Vleck sets a sale at Narrows on the Wabash river for November 6. Levi Springer announces a sale five miles west of the city on October 31. Eight broad sows omitted in the Milligan-Jewell ad will be sold on the sale date.
The Sullivan County Pure Bred Livestock Association hosts its annual stock show this Saturday. A large collection of stock will be exhibited.
W. T. Leahy, recently taken ill at home with influenza, is reported to be improving as of today.
Mrs. Winnie Ann Plew, 95, possibly the county’s oldest native born resident, died Thursday at her home two miles northeast of the city. Funeral Friday at the home conducted by Rev. Mathias of the Church of Christ. Burial at Wall cemetery. Born September 29, 1823 in Hamilton township near the county infirmary site. Widow of Preston Plew. Survived by two children Ophelia Turner of this city and Minor Plew of Wichita Kansas.
County Superintendent Richard Park reports from Horace Ellis that the regular October teachers examination will be held Saturday at the high school building despite the flu epidemic.
Frank Spencer sold his mine in Jefferson township to the Vigo Coal and Mining Company of Terre Haute for 25000 dollars. The Union had previously announced an incorrect sale to the Monon Coal Company last week.
Susie Smith of this city was granted a divorce last week in the circuit court from Robert Smith.
Lieutenant Kinman writes from Camp Kearney California October 15 1918 about the 48th Machine Gun Battalion and the vital role of the Knights of Columbus Y M C A and other groups in Army life He notes quarantine for Spanish influenza limits on movement and laments propaganda while praising outdoor camp entertainment and support from Sullivan Indiana locals.
Mrs Mary Thresa Fowler Leahy 31 wife of Sullivan businessman William T Leahy died Friday night at home after influenza developed into pneumonia The family plans a Louisville burial but funeral is deferred due to Mr Leahy’s illness Survived by husband two children Dorothy and William Jr her father Dr J W Fowler sister Mrs Roy Moore and brother Lieut J W Fowler now in New York bound for France The Leahy family had moved to town four years ago with the Merchants Ice and Fuel Company plant involvement
A Fairbanks township crowd painted the home of Hiram Drake with yellow stripes and the words Kaiser and slacker after Drake refused Liberty bonds. Drake later bought 500 dollars in bonds and pledged to buy more. A separate incident saw Tom Hayhurst’s garage painted for similarly resisting war bond support.
Sullivan county surpassed its Liberty Loan quota of 916000 by raising 1000000. Most townships exceeded goals with only a few laggards improving their totals. Taylor Jewell learns from daughter Elsie Corbin of Los Angeles that son Winfield G. Jewell died in France from wounds suffered in battle on July 19. He served 14 years in the regular army.
Dr. J. N. Hurty, secretary of the state board of health, says the influenza ban is continued until next Saturday night. The county reports numerous cases, with nearly forty cases in the area.
The September term of the Sullivan circuit court will close Saturday and the November term will convene November 26.
Carlisle physician Dr George W Pirtle has been commissioned as a first lieutenant in the Army Medical Reserve Corps. The appointment singles out his medical service and national duty, reflecting his cabinet in uniform and ongoing commitment to military health care.
