R A Plunkett writes from Lynwood California October 7 1923 describing California total eclipse observations including clouded totality a shadow sweeping the sea and a brief sun glimpse He recalls earthquake reports Japan and comments on Japanese people and industry He notes visitors to Sullivan and Hollywood screenings and discusses evolution readings and Indiana memories with neighbors and friends.
In Indianapolis Judge A B Anderson granted a temporary injunction under the Sherman act against the Central Labor Union of Sullivan Indiana its officers and striking telephone operators in a Sullivan Telephone Company suit to restrain interference with its business The court cited interstate line operation between Indiana and Illinois as the basis for the action
The trustees of Little Flock request all subscribers to the cemetery trust fund to pay at The Peoples State Bank Sullivan or Shelburn National Bank at their earliest convenience. Subscriptions exceed $1,000 and a meeting of all interested is urged to form an association and plan investment of the fund in early November.
A marriage license issued yesterday in Terre Haute to Paschal Taylor 62 barber of Shelburn and Mary Wall 62 of Carson City Nevada confirms their marriage.
The Union notes that taxes are a local matter and reports the county board of commissioners allowed claims for free gravel road repairs totaling 18,475.89 dollars. A temporary loan was needed to cover the expenditure, with costs spreading across all parts of the county. Local demands and administration drive taxation.
Ida Tarbell reports biographers challenge the idea that Abraham Lincoln died penniless. The 1866 settlement split $110,974.68 among Mary Lincoln, Robert Lincoln, and Thaddeus Lincoln, with Lincoln’s assets including Springfield house, Lincoln town lot, Crawford Tama County farm, and government bonds totaling about $79,482.70 plus notes earning 10 percent. Real estate and congressional advances to Mrs. Lincoln later boosted the final sum.
Mr and Mrs Ed P Reed and their daughter Miss Sarah Reed and a female friend from Palestine were involved in a Saturday night wreck on the First Street road about 14 miles south of Terre Haute. Their car was struck by a north bound vehicle and plunged into a 14 foot ravine. Miss Reed and her friend escaped unharmed while Mr Reed suffered a scalp wound and Mrs Reed injuries to the face and head. The Reed car was easily freed and the travelers continued home.
Mrs Estelle Langworthy of San Diego travels from Sullivan and Worthington to Saint Joe Michigan to visit her brother Carl Hinkle and wife after extended family visits here. It is her first trip back in 26 years and she reconnects with old friends before heading home to California.
Descendants of Revolutionary soldier Benjamin Turman gathered at Big Springs church for a reunion with a dinner, music, and reminiscences. Historic Turman sites including Old Fort Turman and Benjamin Turman’s grave were marked with flags. A Chicago relative brought bullet molds from the Fort Turman defense. A marker committee was named for the grave, and next year’s reunion will be at Turkey Run.
Mrs. C. H. Stratton was re elected yesterday as commissioner of the Sullivan Girl Scouts. Other officers elected were Mrs. Ward Hawkins first deputy Miss Belle Duffy second deputy Miss Eunice Drennan secretary and R W Akin treasurer. One hundred thirty girls are members.
Jesse Bicknell accepted a position in the office of Harve Thompson, the county treasurer. This move places Bicknell in a role within the county administration under Thompson's supervision.
Mrs. Louisa Hammond aged 91 widow of John Hammond long a county pioneer died here Friday at her daughter Mrs. John Rodman’s home. Funeral Sunday at the Rodman residence by Rev. J A Sumwalt pastor of the Methodist church. Burial Coffman cemetery. Born October 22 1832 in the county to Isaac and Margaret Joseph. First married 1850 to William Kelly died 1852 then married 1858 to John Hammond. Survived by daughter Mrs. Rodman two sons Omer Hammond and John Hammond of Long Beach California another son Samuel Hammond of Evansville and stepson Silas Hammond of this city.
Mrs Elizabeth Steele 65 longtime Linton resident died at 649 Fourth Street Northwest Friday afternoon after a years long cancer battle. Survived by husband Cumming Steele five children Andrew Dickey Samuel Dickey Ellen Price Orion Nickerson Jack Park a sister Mrs W M Decks in Australia and a Presbyterian church member. Funeral 10 AM Monday at home with burial in Fairview Linton Citizen.
Dr. H. H. Hendricks of Nashville began a two week revival at the Presbyterian church here assisted by Prof. Dale Haven as musical director. A series of prayer meetings are held at church members’ homes. Hendricks previously led successful meetings at this church eight years ago.
After eight years under Helen Akin, Carlisle’s old Akin Mercantile store changes hands to Star Grocery Co. The firm, dating to 1850s with Ransom W. Akin, Joes and Charles T. Akin, was the county’s oldest mercantile business. Miss Helen Akin, a granddaughter, sells the store known as RB OW Akin & Sons to continue at the same location.
State road superintendent Steve Stalcup announced immediate work on the Linton Daveer Sullivan road and the southward link from Linton Bloomfield through Newberry Elmera and Plainville to Washington. The lines designated as extensions to state routes 30 and 28 will be brought under state highway commission control with rapid initial improvements planned for passability before winter and further upgrades next year.

Sims & Co. versus Wash Deckard and Pearl Deckard on account. Mabel Burcham versus Sol H. Bureham divorce. Thomas I. Davidson versus Arthur D. Cutler for money collected.
James Scully and Bill McCoy have been granted a patent for a hood hook by the Washington patent office. They plan to sign a manufacturing contract with a Terre Haute firm. Miss Bessie Knotts leaves county hospital after weeks with a fractured hip. Her sister Mrs. Sam Eslinger of Springfield, Missouri visited Col. R. F. Knotts and family last week.
Judge Wood orders a venire of fifty men to select a jury for a murder trial of William Goings Clarence Shepherd and Flasd Shepherd in Terre Haute. Prosecution by N. J. Harris and Noble Johnson. defense by J. Z. Stankard with assistance. Trial likely this term. defendants object to immediate trial.
Jesse McCracklin of Shelburn pleaded guilty in Mayor Walters court to liquor law violations. He received a 100 dollar fine and a 90 day sentence to the state farm. John Borders faced a similar charge and received a comparable sentence.
