Allatoona Pass Action Endures in Civil War Memory
The defense of Allatoona Pass in Georgia on Oct 5 1864 saw 1800 Federal troops under Brigadier General J M Corse hold a critical position against Confederates led by General S G French. After six hours of brutal combat, with heavy losses on both sides, the attackers failed to break through and withdrew. Sherman credited the defense as crucial to Union operations in the Georgia campaign. Corse praised his officers and troops especially the Thirty Ninth Iowa and Seventh Illinois.
