Watson Claims Tariff Averts Higher Living Costs
Greenfield Ind Sept 27 Senator James E Watson contends the Fordney emergency tariff halted the drop in farm product prices without raising consumer food costs. He notes farm prices fell under 1920 policies due to credit cuts and imports, but tariffs kept U S prices above world levels and reduced the burden on farmers while 63 percent of imports stay duty free under the new law.
