How the Turkey Became the Thanksgiving Bird
Historical accounts offer no definite origin for the turkey as the Thanksgiving bird. Puritan chroniclers recount 1621 Bradford sending four hunters to gather meat, including wild turkeys, followed by a communal feast. In 1622 a second hunting party returned with abundant game and a day of thanksgiving was held. Massasoit and ninety warriors reportedly joined, bringing turkeys and venison to feasts lasting three days.
