Letter From Sullivan Man Describes Cotton South and Trade
Bailey Hawkins writes of travel from Sullivan to Mississippi and Arkansas, noting snow in Kentucky and Tennessee, cotton as principal crop, land prices from five to forty dollars per acre, slave-era mortgage patterns, and rising farm incomes in Springdale and surrounding towns. He remarks hospitable locals, no saloons in Arkansas, and a buoyant postwar rural economy.
