Coal then and now in Terre Haute mining history
A Terre Haute Spectator feature recalls how coal screenings traded for pennies a ton in 1913 and 1914, with miners receiving little for screenings and operators using railroads to avoid demurrage. The piece notes past price swings from 10 to 72 12 cents and explains the era of “good old days” coal economics. In Sullivan, an explosion at Black Comet mine injures Charles Perry and Jess Thomas, who suffer burns but are reported out of danger after hospital treatment.
