Rney McBride died after coming into contact with high tension wires at a sub station. Fire department and investigators to determine precise cause and whether safety measures were followed.
Barney McBride a 38 year old coal miner formerly with Paxton mines was instantly killed early Friday at the T H I E traction sub station in Farmersburg when he sought shelter and touched a live wire in the wet house. Coroner Idgett reported McBride was seen near Farmersburg asking for a place to sleep and was directed to the sand house but entered the sub station instead. The body was found by C R Trueblood and sent for burial to Cass, with arrangements by his sister Mrs Ed Grubaugh.
Will Watson of Airbanks township held a sale in a tent due to rain. Forty one head of Jersey hogs sold for a total of 1100 dollars with the top price 45 dollars for one animal.
A local option election will be held in Jackson township next Tuesday as wet and dry leaders mobilize. Placards and rosters mark the campaign across five precincts. Hymera hosts seven saloons while three remain in the township. The vote follows a petition from the dry camp.
County oil notes report No. 3 drilled yesterday afternoon by the Ohio Oil Company and Hawkins & Bailey on the Tohn W. Shepherd farm in Turman township. A Bays & Akin well on the M. H. Dix farm west of town proves to be a fine producer.
The November term opens Monday November 24 with trials scheduled through mid January. Key entries include State v Risinger Weaver Clouse on December 2 and multiple follow-on cases each day from December 3 to January 14 including ex rel suits and township actions.
Miss Adna Calvert a Latin teacher at Fairmount High School visited her parents Mr and Mrs Robert Calvert here last week. Fairmount schools closed a few days due to a diphtheria epidemic in the schools.
The Democratic slate won the city election yesterday led by Mayor Robert Calvert who defeated Joe Schroeder by 15 votes. James M. Dudley won clerk. wards chose Harry Ritchie Hugh Giles and James Greenlee as councilmen, with Everett Stewart and Glessie Walters elected at large. Final ward tallies show mixed results for Schroeder and Calvert with minor variances. Socialist Elmer McKee received 135 mayoral votes.
The new council plans to have a say in selecting the chief of police. Oscar Rich is named as chief, with James Willis and Virgil Wright as patrolmen. Lee Bays is said to be appointed city attorney, though Matt Pigg wishes the post. Pigg and Gilbert Gambill led the political campaign's literary efforts.
Shelburn Independents swept the vote with 1204 of 1941 cast, ahead of Socialists. Top offices included Marshal Clell Spinks 315 and Fr H Montgomery 285, with Roy Hirschfield 187 and Joe Powell 161 in the clerk and treasurer race. Trustees in wards show Bolinger winning by 111 over his brother and Charles Thompson taking first ward by 104.
In today’s election here Thomas Bridwell Socialist was chosen marshal J E Beckett Republican clerk treasurer Fred McClanahan Democrat councilman and Jesse Evans Republican councilman The vote was light and all the pluralities were small.
Indiana cities chose a slate of mayors with party affiliations listed. Notable results include Terre Haute Democrat Donn M. Roberts Indianapolis Democrat Joseph E. Bell Evansville Democrat Benj Bosse Fort Wayne Democrat W J Hosey and South Bend Democrat Fred A. Keller.
Graysville residents Mr and Mrs Ephriam Thomas celebrate their fifty eighth wedding anniversary Native of Marion County Indiana they wed in Indianapolis October 28 1855 They moved to Turman township in 1867 and have been active Methodist Episcopal Church members for over 60 years Mr Thomas long treasurer of Graysville M E church and Odd Fellows member They have one son Charles Thomas of Turman township.

A Tuesday morning fire starting from a defective flue gutted Charles A. Griffin’s Hardware Store and three adjoining warehouses in Carlisle. The blaze damaged the Masonic hall across the street, with total losses around $23,000 and partial insurance coverage. residents narrowly escaped.
Rev M W Yocum, longtime pastor at Jeffersonville Christian church, accepts the pastorate at Linton. He succeeds Rev Melnette Miller, who previously led the Linton church, and Yocum has previously served as pastor at the Jeffersonville church.
Mrs. Mabel Riggs, long at Nazareth Hospital in Nazareth Michigan, has moved to Merom to live with Mrs. Ei Ward, beginning a new home arrangement.
Paul L. Reid, noted local businessman and former secretary of Index Nation Company, has been elected assistant cashier by the board of directors and assumed duties Saturday. Directors granted leave of absence to George R. Dutton, bank president, who will spend the winter in California for health and rest.
Sheriff Kelley seized an asphalt mixing machine valued at 1000 dollars after a replevin suit by Edward W. Seamans for the Rapid Mixer Company of Detroit. The machine was used to pave West Washington Street to Center Ridge Cemetery, now open to traffic. The complaint alleges the machine was leased to the American Asphaltum Company of Chicago, currently in receivership, and Bergen had leased it from the Chicago concern.
Mrs Cora Ellis and Miss Lou Ellis, widow and daughter of the late Claude A Ellis, found thieves had entered their St Charles Illinois house and removed clothing and other articles valued at about 100 dollars. Police could not locate the thieves or the entry time.
Joseph Souter and Miss Bertha McClanahan, both well known locally, wed Saturday evening November 1 at 8 o'clock in the Methodist parsonage with Rev. P. C. Lisman officiating. They will reside at 744 East Beech Street.
Friends and relatives gathered at Mr. and Mrs. John Jewell’s home west of Shelburn to celebrate Mrs. Jewell’s 48th birthday and her sister Mrs. Douglas Martin’s 41st birthday. A long list of family and neighbors attended from Terre Haute Sullivan Lewis and local areas.
A gasoline motor exploded at the mine injuring no one as foreman McClanahan and another worker escaped unharmed. The blast raised alarms but caused no injuries or fatalities.
Fred McClanahan, foreman at Consolidated Indiana Coal Company mine No 32, survived a freak explosion Friday night when a seven ton gasoline motor blew apart due to defective valves. His cap and lamp were flung 100 feet. hair singed, he suffered no serious injuries as the mine shut down for a replacement motor.
The Kennedy Oil Company drilled Well No. 2 on the J. H. Wood farm in Fairbanks township and hit a 200 barrel producer. Oil gushed to 200 feet, with over thirty five feet of oil sand encountered at under 700 feet. Wood farm neighbors Heien farm where Ohio Oil has many producers. No. 1 on Wood farm also yields 200 barrels. Mrs. Wood is Herman Heien's mother.
Two revolvers found at a Hymera pawn shop matched those left at the Cummins hardware store last summer. James Weaver, 24, of Hymera, was arrested at his home by Sheriff Ed Kelly on suspicion of the robbery. The case is being investigated and a formal charge is expected soon.
Herman S. Martin, ten year old son of N. D. Martin, trustee of Hamilton township, died Monday at 4 am at the family home from congestion of the stomach and bowels after a week of illness. Born January 16, 1898, he was a 5A student and Sunday school pupil. Survived by mother, father, brother Clyde of Terre Haute, and sister Mrs. Stella Weaver. Funeral held yesterday at 10 am at the residence, Rev. G. W. Titus officiating. burial in Liberty cemetery.
The Thompson and Burkholder families of the city placed a hand stone monument on the family lot in Star Ridge cemetery last week, marking a communal memorial gesture and family pride.
