Yorktown Virginia October 16 1881 Dear Mother I write from Yorktown as the 4th artillery heads for New York Harbor after an order changing regiments. I may not return to Atlanta and the unit could stay after the celebration to help with cleanup. We left Atlanta unexpectedly and traveled via Norfolk to Yorktown where thousands of troops and militia gather. General Hancock is present and tents line fields between Lebanon and Tony’s farm. The town buzzes with activity as drills continue and the bugle calls echo across the camps.
