War Fifty Years Ago A Civil War Retrospective
James A. Edgerton reflects on the dawn of the Civil War, detailing the June 9 10 operations around Bethel, the deaths of Colonel Townsend and Major Winthrop, and early 1861 campaigns. He notes strategic debates, retreat criticisms, and the broader balance of forces near Fortress Monroe and Bull Run. Local items from Hutsonville and surrounding notes follow, ending with an ad for Bucklin's Arnica Salve.
Battle of Big Bethel Marks First Civil War Ground Fight
TheJune 10 engagement at Big Bethel followed a confusing friendly fire incident that caused killed and wounded in both Union regiments. Union forces pressed forward but faced morass and were ordered to retreat as Confederates held entrenched positions. Captain Greble aided by holding off defenders during retreat. The week also saw Susquehanna arrive, Harriet Lane battery actions, and Tennessee ratifying secession.
