Autocratic school rules threaten Indiana nonstate colleges
The Indiana state board of education requires a five hundred thousand dollar minimum endowment for a standard college, a rule critics call autocratic and harmful to Union Christian College Merom and other nonstate institutions. They warn state aid has favored state colleges, hurting smaller schools that rely on church or private donors. Governor McCray may repeal the law, officials say, to protect private and church colleges doing two-thirds of the state's higher education without tax dollars.
